- Live and work on a Game Reserve at the base of the Leshotho mountains, surrounded by wildlife and breathtaking scenery.
- You will be hosted by Wendy and Shelton, two meerkat specialists with extensive experience in meerkat habituation and conservation.
Skills Required
None, just reasonable fitness as we mainly walk to study sites.
Volunteer Role
Through your involvement, we are able to provide the funding and manpower for crucial research on meerkats. Without you, some of the projects would just not be viable! As a Meerkat Research Assistant you will gain understanding of animal behaviour. Your Duties include:
- Habituating meerkat groups
- Behavioural Observation
- Mapping Meerkat Territories
- Inspiring and educating farm children about meerkats
Location
The project is currently based at Moolmanshoek Private Game Reserve, a beautiful undiscovered piece of nature hidden in the Eastern Free State. Bordering on the Lesotho mountains, and at the base of one of South Africa's highest mountains, Moolmanshoek is a private game farm home to herds of zebra, wildebeest, gemsbok, ostriches and of course- a large density of meerkats. It has recently been declared a National Heritage Site.
Accommodation
Volunteers stay in Wendy's cosy cottage on the farm property, equipped with braai (barbeque) facilities and a fantastic view of the mountain!
Meals
Two meals a day are provided (Breakfast and Dinner) and you can help yourself to lunch.
