June 2008 » Leopards in the forest

The Tsitsikamma forest is ideal leopard territory, and although there has been much debate over the presence of leopard in the forest, our Coastal and Forest Monitoring Volunteers have found a number of signs directly relating to at least two adult individuals, during our forest animal tracking project. Leopards are solitary animals, and are very rarely sighted. In the Tsitsikamma forest, we rely solely on the tracks that they leave when they are on the move to water points, or the signs they make to mark their territory (such as scratches on trees), in order to determine the individuals present.
